Reimagining the Belfast experience – XR funding competition launching early summer 2023

Augment the City will bring together our talented creative digital sector, leading industry partners and our local universities to reimagine the Belfast city experience by using immersive and other new technologies.

The Belfast City Innovation Office is working with partners on plans to deliver the Augment the City programme in 2023-24.

This includes a major new £500K funding competition to support local SMEs to innovate in immersive technologies and explore how they can offer visitors and residents new ways to engage, interpret and experience the cultural, social and historical offerings of our city.

We want you to show us what the future of the visitor experience will look like. Whether it’s AR, VR, the metaverse or Chat GPT – we’re open to exploring the latest ideas. Help us tell the story of Belfast to a new generation of visitors.

  • £500K funding to support innovation and R&D to develop ideas, proofs of concepts and prototypes in immersive technologies.
  • Funding for individual applicants will range from £10,000 for idea development to over £100,000 for prototypes.
  • A 5G enabled visitor testbed and showcase environment to enable testing, trialling and demonstrations of products and solutions.
  • Expert support and mentoring.
  • User testing and feedback from visitors to improve and enhance prototypes.
